Lip Flips vs Lip Filler: Which Gives The Best Pout?
Don't fall for the IG posts showing the perfect pout with just tox, it's probably both tox and filler.
You see it all over the gram, "the perfect pout", "love my tox lip flip", and the classic, "only 2 units of tox". Everyone wants full lips while looking natural. But, like most social media posts, there is more than what meets the eye. Yes, they may have just gotten tox to add a little roll up look to provide a fuller look but they probably also had filler done at the same treatment or before.
A lip flip will relax the muscles around the upper lip that pulls the lip inward. Since the muscles are now relaxed, the lips will now protrude outward.
A lip filler treatment will add volume to your lips. Giving you the plump, soften the "smoker lines" or subtly provide volume to sliver lips.
Depending on the look you're wanting, your budget and what you feel comfortable with, you might want one or the other or both.
What is a Lip Flip?
- How it Works: Angie or another licensed nurse will use a small amount of neurotoxin (Xeomin/Jeuveau) injected into the orbicularis oris (upper lip) to relax it, allowing the lip to flip upward slightly.
- What it Fixes: This treatment is great for gummy smiles, upper lips that "disappear" when smiling. The upward flip also provides a slightly fuller upper lip look.
- Things to Know:
- Results onset: 3 - 14 days.
- Longevity: 8–12 weeks. With tox, dosage = duration. Because it is a minimal amount of tox, it doesn't last as long. Other areas of the face usually last 12-16 weeks.
- Cost: $10 per unit. Most lip flip treatments are 4-8 units and an add on treatment.
Perfect for big events like weddings. It's temporary and gives a very natural look for the pictures that'll last a lifetime.
You will have to learn how to drink out of a straw again. As a little pointer, suck the straw from the corner of your mouth. You'll thank me later.
What is Lip Filler?
- How it Works: Angie or another licensed nurse will use hyaluronic acid dermal filler directly into the lips to add volume, shape, and symmetry.
- What it Fixes: Thin or sliver lips, asymmetry, loss of volume due to aging, structural shape goals and to soften "smoker lines".
- Things to Know:
- Results onset: Immediate.
- Longevity: 6–12 months.
- Downtime: Potential for mild swelling or bruising for 2–5 days. Swelling can last up to 2 weeks so be patient with your final results.
- Cost: $500 for full syringe, $300 for half, $200 for quarter at Angie's Injections in Eagle Mountain, Utah.
Someone wanting noticeable volume or shape refinement that also wants the look to last longer. Too much filler isn't the look most people want. Start with a smaller amount for your first treatment. You can always come back for more.
You can also dissolve lip filler and this is recommended when you're ready for a lip refresh. Be aware though that lip dissolver product can't be used if you're allergic to bee stings.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Tox | Filler | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Subtle flip | Actual Volume |
| Longevity | 2-3 Months | 6-12 Months |
| Cost | $40-$80 | $200-$500 |
| Maintenance | Frequent touch ups | 2 touch ups per year |
The "Best of Both Worlds"
Treat yourself and get both! Get the filler to add the volume and get the tox to accentuate a cupids bow. Combining the two provides a soft and defined finish that is picture perfect for the gram. Just don't post that you have amazing lips with just a few units of tox. haha
Which One Should You Choose?
- Choose a Lip Flip if: You’re on a budget, want to test the waters, or just want your lip to stop tucking in when you smile.
- Choose Lip Filler if: You want actual plumpness, want to fix symmetry, or want results that last for months.
