Look Younger with Botox: 60 Frequently Asked Question and Guide to Treatments, Costs & Results
What does getting botox actually mean?
Before we answer all your questions about Botox. Let's talk about Botox – or should we say, "Botox?" You know how we call all tissues "Kleenex" and all bandages "Bandaids?" Well, Botox is kinda like the "Kleenex" of wrinkle relaxers. It was the OG, the first one on the scene, so its name stuck, even though there are now lots of other options out there like Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. Kinda like like how we "Google" something even if we're using a different search engine.
So, you might be booking a "Botox" appointment, but actually getting one of its siblings injected. The Botox product is just one brand of botulinum toxin type A. It's like asking for a Kleenex and getting... well, a different tissue.
In this post, we'll answer all your burning questions about safety, cost, and results around Botox and the procedure. We’ll also give a link to more information for those that want to dig deeper into this amazing procedure. Get ready to become a savvy consumer, because when it comes to your face, it pays to know exactly what you're getting!
What is Botox?
What is Botox made of?
Botulinum toxin has two forms:
- Type A. Type A is what is mostly known and used for wrinkles. Type A products are onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox), abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport), incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin), daxibotulinumtoxinA (Daxxify) and prabotulinumtoxinA (Jeuveau).
- Type B. Type B is used for neck spasms and sold as rimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc).

Are there other ingredients in Botox products vs other products?
Yes! As you can see with the different botox names in the previous question, these different names are due to the recipe and or manufacturing of each product.
These products are similar but not interchangeable. Each product has unique characteristics.. It's a bit like having different varieties of apples – they're all apples, but they have subtle differences in taste, texture, and how you might use them.
I have a client that I have to use Xeomin for because it doesn’t contain a certain ingredient that Botox or Jeuveau uses.

What is the difference between Botox and fillers?
I’ll let my Instagram post do the explaining...

Is Botox FDA approved?
Yes. Here is the medication guide for Botox provided by the FDA. Xeomin, Jeuveau, Dysport and Daxxify are all FDA approved as well.
Botox for Wrinkles:
How long does it take for Botox to work on wrinkles?

At what age should you start getting Botox?
Legally, a person isn’t allowed to get botox before age 18 (unless parent consents). It is best to consult with your provider on a treatment plan tailored to you and your goals. How much sun exposure have you had? What do your parents look like? Many variables to determine on when you should start.

What is "Baby Botox"?
Baby botox refers to botox treatments using a less number of units to reduce the “frozen” feeling or “plastic” look. I’d say I start most clients with “Baby Botox” and increase the number of units from there. I’d rather give less units to someone and build over time to match their look/goals vs freezing faces. Different approaches are used by different spas but I like my approach more.

What areas are most popular for botox treatments?
Another IG post to explain
What areas aren’t as popular for botox treatments?
Armpits, hands, overactive bladder, cross eyes and believe it or not, premature ejaculation (researchers are studying this)

Botox for Forehead Lines:
How many units of Botox are needed for forehead lines?
Depends on lots of things. Size of your forehead, depth of lines, age, muscle strength (men usually have stronger muscles) and look you’re wanting will all determine the amount needed. I’ve had people spend $100 all the way up to $700+ for a treatment. Most clients spend around $200 for the forehead. You shouldn’t only treat the forehead either, if you do, you’ll be wondering why everyone thinks you’re glaring at them. When you treat the forehead only, it creates an imbalanced look and it seems like you’re glaring at people.
Can Botox fix deep forehead wrinkles?
Nope, they can soften the lines but not fix them. Plastic surgery is a great option for lots of people with deep static lines.
How do I prevent forehead wrinkles before needing Botox?
If you want to be expressionless and never have facial movement, that is the best way to prevent wrinkles. Good luck with that 🙂
Botox for Crow's Feet:
Does Botox help with under-eye wrinkles?
Not really. Botox is much more effective on the sides of your eyes. Under eye wrinkles are best treated with dermal fillers. Do know that fillers do NOT help with pigmentation.

How long does Botox last for crow's feet around eyes?
Like botox treatments for other areas, 3 - 6 months.
Botox for crow's feet men vs. women - any difference?
Yes, men tend to get crow’s feet earlier than woman due to higher amounts of MMPs. MMP’s break down collagen in your skin.

Botox for Gummy Smile:
How does Botox help with a gummy smile?
Gummy smiles are caused by an overactive muscle and lifts the upper lip too high which exposes more gums. Botox helps relax the overactive muscle. Imagine a window shade that's pulled up too high, revealing too much of the window. Botox is like gently lowering that shade, so you see less of what's underneath (in this case, your gums!).This is also called a “Lip Flip”

How much does Botox for a gummy smile cost?
You can expect to pay $40-$80 for a “Lip Flip”.
Botox for Masseter Reduction (Jaw Slimming):
How does Botox slim the jawline?
Think of Botox like deflating an overfilled balloon – it reduces the size of your jaw muscle for a more sculpted look.
Is Botox for jaw slimming painful?
Like other injection areas, pain is minimal and described as a slight sting.
How long does Botox last for masseter reduction?
Dosage = duration. So the more you get the longer it lasts.
Botox for TMJ, migraines and headaches:
Can Botox help with TMJ pain and headaches?
This is such an amazing treatment for so many people seeking help with their headaches. I’ve had clients that went to specialists for help and tried botox as a last resort. Sure enough, game changer. A lot of male clients come in for TMJ treatments.
Source - National Library of Medicine - Evaluation of the Efficacy of Low-Dose Botulinum Toxin Injection Into the Masseter Muscle for the Treatment of Nocturnal Bruxism: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
How many Botox units are used for TMJ treatment?
So you want to do at least 15-30 units on each side or the one side that is bigger and more tight. That’s the one you’ll want injected. If they feel the same, it’s good to do both sides.
Botox Side Effects & Safety:
Is Botox safe?
Yes, it is! But like every drug and medical procedure there are risks. We also like “Botched” or tabloidesque type stories but they rarely happen. The worst case I’ve recently read about is of a lady that ended up in the ICU. Strange thing, she had been getting the same procedure from the same injector for years. You can read about the story here.
What are the most common side effects of Botox?
Headache, bruising, drooping eyelid, bumps at the injection site. All of these can be taken care of with over-the-counter medications and aren’t permanent.
What are the serious side effects of Botox?
Blurred vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, loss of bladder control, allergic reactions, difficulty breathing
Source - Healthline - Side Effects of Botox: What You Need to Know
Can Botox spread to other parts of the body?
It sure can and occurrences are rare.
Who should not get Botox?
Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, certain medical conditions like myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome can be worsened by Botox.
Are there any long-term effects of Botox?
If you’re not using muscles they can atrophy and weaken. This could change your image. Though, stopping botox would get those muscles moving again. You can also form antibodies and botox no longer works for you. Sometimes changing to a different product allows you to get the same results.
Is Botox addictive?
There's nothing in Botox itself that causes cravings or withdrawal symptoms like you might experience with addictive substances. People can get a psychological dependence and chase the feeling of a youthful image.
Botox Cost & Payment:
How much does Botox cost?
There are lots of spas that have a big beautiful building with lots of lasers and stuff which is great for them but also creates overhead and pressure to sell more. For me, I am incentivized to do the best job so I can have people come back. I don’t have tons of overhead so I can be more affordable which then helps more people. Both business models are great but I like mine more 😊 But what about the $10? It’s simple – we believe in transparency and honesty. While some may view such a low price with skepticism, we assure you that there are no hidden fees or compromises on quality. We review number of units and pricing before we inject. Last thing anyone wants are surprises, especially when it comes to money.
What factors affect the cost of Botox?
Experience of the injector, overhead costs and also location. Big cities are usually charging $15+ per unit.
Does insurance cover Botox?
For cosmetic purposes, no. For medical purposes like chronic migraines, muscle spasms or excessive sweating, yes.
Are there financing options available for Botox?
Depends on where you get treatments and many spas offer financing for treatments. We currently don't offer financing options at Angie's Injections.
What are Botox parties?
Are they safe? Botox parties are great social events where guests get injections. Bachelorette parties, couples parties and birthday parties are perfect opportunities to get a treatment. Yes, they are safe and legal. Learn more about some of the Botox parties I’ve done here in Utah.
Botox Procedure & Aftercare:
How is Botox administered?
Botox is given in small injections using a very fine needle. Here's a step-by-step breakdown:
- Consultation and Assessment:
- We discuss your goals, medical history, and assess your facial muscles to determine the appropriate treatment areas and dosage.
- Cleansing:
- The injection sites will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution.
- Injection:
- Tiny amounts of Botox are injected into specific muscles using a fine needle.
- The number of injections varies depending on the treatment area and desired results.
Does Botox hurt?
They’re like a quick pinch or a small bug bite. Some describe the poke sounding like the crunch while walking in fresh snow.
How long does a Botox appointment take?
30 minutes is the usual time it takes for a botox treatment on your first visit. Subsequent visits can be as quick as 10 minutes because the treatment plan is already in place and some subtle tweaks to the number of units will be determined.
What should you do before a Botox treatment?
- Avoid blood-thinning supplements and medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and other supplements. These items may increase the chance of bruising.
- Avoid harsh exfoliating treatments, facial waxing appointments, chemical peels, or anything that could irritate your skin in the days before your treatment.
- For a minimum of 3 days pre-treatment, avoid using anything perceived as 'active' skincare. This includes products which contain Retinol, Vitamin C, Hydroxy Acids or Beta Hydroxy Acid.
- Drink plenty of water before and after your appointment. Water hydrates your skin and will make your results look that much better.
- Avoid drinking alcohol, at least 24 before your appointment.
- Avoid wearing makeup to your appointment.
What should you avoid immediately after Botox treatment?
- Don’t lay down for 4 hours
- Don’t scratch, pick at or massage area
- Avoid hot tubs and exercise for 4 hours
- Be patient, results can take 10-14 days
How can you make Botox last longer?
- Avoid the sun and use sunscreen
- Moisturize your skin
- Don’t use nicotine products
- Consider low intensity workouts - high-intensity workouts might slightly reduce Botox duration in some people but more research is needed
Botox Alternatives:
What are some natural alternatives to Botox?
1. Facial Exercises
- How they work: Like any muscle, facial muscles can be toned and strengthened with exercise. Regular facial exercises can help improve circulation, tighten skin, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
- Examples: Look up exercises for your forehead, eyes, cheeks, and neck. Some popular techniques include "The Lion Face," "Cheek Lifts," and "Eye Squints."
- Benefits: Non-invasive, inexpensive, and can be done anywhere.
- Drawbacks: Results are generally subtle and require consistency.
2. Facial Massage
- How it works: Massage increases blood flow and stimulates collagen production, which can help improve skin elasticity and reduce wrinkles.
- Techniques: Use your fingers or a facial roller to gently massage your face in upward and outward motions.
- Benefits: Relaxing, improves circulation, and can be incorporated into your skincare routine.
- Drawbacks: Results are gradual and may not be as dramatic as Botox.
3. Topical Treatments
- Retinoids: Vitamin A derivatives that stimulate collagen production and reduce fine lines.
- Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant that protects against sun damage and promotes collagen synthesis.
- Hyaluronic acid: A humectant that draws moisture to the skin, plumping it up and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
- Peptides: Amino acids that can stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture.
- Benefits: Can be easily incorporated into your skincare routine.
- Drawbacks: Results can be subtle and take time to appear.
4. Lifestyle Changes
- Sun protection: Wear sunscreen daily and a hat when outdoors to protect your skin from sun damage.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin plump and hydrated.
- Healthy diet: Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and antioxidants.
- Stress management: Practice stress-reducing techniques like yoga or meditation.
- Quit smoking: Smoking accelerates aging and damages skin.
- Benefits: Holistic approach to healthy aging.
- Drawbacks: Requires commitment and may not provide immediate or dramatic results.
5. Other Non-Invasive Treatments
- Microcurrent: Uses low-level electrical currents to stimulate facial muscles and improve skin tone.
- Radiofrequency: Uses radio waves to heat the skin and stimulate collagen production.
- Ultrasound: Uses sound waves to tighten and lift skin.
- Benefits: Non-invasive and can provide noticeable results.
- Drawbacks: Can be expensive and may require multiple sessions.
Important Note:
- Results vary: The effectiveness of natural alternatives can vary depending on individual factors like age, skin type, and lifestyle habits.
- Combined approach: Often, a combination of natural alternatives works best.
Are there other injectables besides Botox?
Yes, there are lots of injectable products in the market that are FDA approved. For example, Daxxify, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau. Like luxury handbags there are lots of fake/imitation products as well. Buyer beware and ask your injector what they use.
Botox vs Jeuveau, which is better?
Jeuveau is considered the little sister of Botox. The founder and CEO of Jeuveau used to be an executive for Botox. It’s a great product and we use it at Angie’s Injections.
Botox vs Dysport, which is better?
Dysport seems to give a “heavy” feeling to some people because of the way it is constituted.
The 3:1 Ratio: When comparing units, Dysport is typically considered less potent than Botox. This means you'll need approximately 3 units of Dysport to achieve the same effect as 1 unit of Botox.
Why the difference? It comes down to how the units are measured and the different formulations of these two products. They have slightly different manufacturing processes and protein structures, which affects their potency.
Why the "heavy" feeling? While Dysport is less potent per unit, it tends to diffuse more. This means it spreads out further from the injection site. This wider spread can sometimes lead to a slightly heavier feeling, especially if a higher dose is used or if it's injected too close to certain muscles.
Think of it like this:
- Botox: Like a precise laser beam, targeting a specific spot.
- Dysport: More like a gentle floodlight, covering a wider area.
Botox vs Xeomin, which is better?
1. Xeomin is the "Naked" Neurotoxin:
- Fewer ingredients: Unlike Botox and Dysport, which contain accessory proteins, Xeomin is a "naked" or purified form of botulinum toxin type A. This means it doesn't have those extra proteins attached.
- Reduced risk of resistance: Those accessory proteins in Botox and Dysport can sometimes trigger the body to create antibodies. These antibodies can make future treatments less effective. Xeomin's "cleaner" formulation may reduce this risk.
2. Why this matters for young, first-time users:
- Long-term effectiveness: If you're starting Botox young (for preventative reasons or early treatment of fine lines), you're likely looking at many years of potential treatments. Xeomin's lower risk of antibody formation could mean better, more consistent results over the long term.
- Minimizing immune response: A "cleaner" product with fewer additives might be less likely to cause an immune reaction or sensitivity, especially in those with sensitive skin or concerns about potential allergies.
- Natural look: Xeomin is known for producing natural-looking results, which can be especially important for young users who want to subtly refresh their appearance without looking "frozen" or overdone.
Think of it like this:
- Botox/Dysport: A delicious cake with frosting and decorations – might be a bit much for some.
- Xeomin: A perfectly baked, simple cake – pure and delicious.
Botox vs Daxxify, which is better?
Daxxify offers some compelling advantages over Botox, particularly its longer duration and faster onset. However, both are effective treatments. The best choice for you will depend on your individual needs, preferences, and budget, as well as the expertise of your injector.
Finding a Botox Provider:
How do you find a qualified Botox injector?
Always do your due diligence to understand the expertise of your injector. Look at their social profiles like LinkedIn, IG and Google reviews.
What questions should you ask a Botox provider?
"What are your qualifications and experience with Botox?"
- Why it's important: You want to make sure your injector is qualified, experienced, and has a good understanding of facial anatomy.
- Look for: Board-certified dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or registered nurse with specialized training in cosmetic injections. Ask how long they've been injecting and how many Botox procedures they've performed.
"Can I see before-and-after photos of your Botox patients?"
- Why it's important: This gives you a sense of their aesthetic style and whether it aligns with your desired outcome.
- Pay attention to: Natural-looking results, not "frozen" or overdone faces.
"What specific product will you be using (Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify), and why is it the best choice for me?" Ask to see the packaging as well. Lots of fake products are from China and the packaging isn’t legible.
- Why it's important: Different products have different strengths, diffusion patterns, and longevity. Your injector should explain why they've chosen a specific product for your needs.
"What are the potential risks and side effects, and what can be done to minimize them?"
- Why it's important: Every procedure has risks. Your injector should be transparent about them and explain how they minimize complications.
- Red flag: If they downplay risks or seem dismissive of your concerns.
"What can I expect during and after the procedure? What are the aftercare instructions?"
- Why it's important: Knowing what to expect helps reduce anxiety. Clear aftercare instructions are crucial for optimal healing and results.
- Ask about: Pain management, downtime, potential bruising or swelling, and any activities to avoid.
What are the red flags to watch out for when choosing a Botox provider?
1. Unqualified or Inexperienced Injectors
- Lack of credentials: Make sure your injector is a licensed medical professional, such as a board-certified dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or registered nurse with specialized training in cosmetic injections.
- Limited experience: Ask about their experience with Botox specifically. How long have they been injecting, and how many procedures have they performed?
- Unrealistic promises: Be wary of injectors who guarantee specific results or promise miracles.
2. "Too Good to Be True" Deals
- Extremely low prices: If the price seems significantly lower than the average, it could be a sign of counterfeit products, diluted Botox, or an unqualified injector.
- High-pressure sales tactics: Be wary of injectors who pressure you into buying packages or add-ons you don't need.
3. Questionable Practices
- Rushing the consultation: A thorough consultation is essential. If the injector seems rushed or dismissive of your questions, it's a red flag.
- Lack of communication: They should clearly explain the procedure, risks, and aftercare instructions.
- Poor hygiene: The injector and the treatment area should be clean and sterile.
- Overfilled or "frozen" look: If the injector's own face looks overdone or unnatural, it could be a sign of their aesthetic preferences.
4. Negative Reviews or Complaints
- Online reviews: Check online reviews on Google, Yelp, and RealSelf. Look for patterns of complaints or negative experiences.
- Disciplinary actions: You can check with your state medical board to see if the injector has any disciplinary actions on their record.
Trust your gut: If something feels off or you're not comfortable with the injector, don't hesitate to walk away. It's your face and your health—you deserve the best possible care.
